Edith Genevieve Esterby, age 88, a lifelong resident of Cannon Falls, died peacefully on Saturday morning, March 5, 2011 at the Angels Care Center in Cannon Falls, with her family by her side. Edith was born on January 17, 1923 in Cannon Falls, the daughter of Benjamin and Randi (Ramstad) Otterness. She attended Cannon Falls Schools, graduating in 1941, and went on to normal teacher's training. She taught in a one-room school in Goodhue County District #108. She married Andrew J. "Andy" Esterby on August 28, 1943 at the church parsonage in Dennison, MN. Edith was a farm wife and homemaker, raising four children and being very active in her church. She was a lifelong member of Urland Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday school, served on the church council, active in ladies aid and the Bethel Bible Study series. She organized the Urland Cloverleafs 4H Club and was their star leader for many years, and organized the Anniversary group for friends. She was involved with the Goodhue County homemakers project group and was a member of the Leon Township Farm Bureau. Edith enjoyed her perennial flower gardens, reading, quilting, and in the 1950's she started filming wedding movies for her family and friends. She contracted viral encephalitis in 1975. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Andy on 9-27-1995; brothers, William and Donald Otterness; sisters, Ruth Otterness, Edna Benson, Clara Benson, Nettie Braaten, Lydia Witcher and Ruby Lundell. She is survived by her children, Gary (Avis) Esterby of Dennison, Judy (Thomas) Huggett of Medford, WI, Ann (Lars) Romo of Cannon Falls, and Roger (Vicki) Esterby of Cook, MN; eight grandchildren, David Esterby, Matt (Erika) Esterby, Jennifer (Kevin) Therriault, Teresa (Kevin) Erickson, Emily (Brian) LaBare, Laura Forsman, Meagan Esterby, and Katelyn Esterby; six great-grandchildren, Kyan and Kasen Esterby, Ava and Wil Therriault, Shawn and Cora Maye Erickson; sister, Myrtle Nord of Northfield; brother-in-law, Lyle Lundell of Cannon Falls; sister-in-law, Sonja Otterness of Altamont, NY; nieces and nephews; and several step grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 12 at 11:00 am at Urland Lutheran Church. Visitation will be held at the church on Saturday from 9:30-11:00 a.m. Spring interment will be held at the church cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be her grandchildren. Memorials are preferred to the Urland Church Park for park improvements.
