Duaine Berhow

November 24, 1936 — January 10, 2017

Duaine Joseph Berhow, age 80, died Tuesday, January 10, 2017 in Cannon Falls, Minnesota, his hometown of 44 years. Duaine was born in Albert Lea, MN on November 24, 1936, to Harley and Ruth (Howard) Berhow. He grew up on the family farm near Mason City, IA, where his love for shenanigans was rivaled only by his love for country living. He attended Mason City High School where he was extremely proud of his track career and longtime records. After graduating in 1955, he served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Kidd. He had a lifelong love for the railroad, and for 25 years, Duaine was working on the railroad "all the live-long day," retiring as a yardmaster for the Rock Island in 1980. At that time, he owned and operated the Modern Cleaners and Quick Clean Laundromat in Cannon Falls for 15 years. After selling the businesses, Duaine enjoyed his final dream job with the Cannon Falls Beacon delivering papers, and more importantly, shooting the breeze with everyone in town. In 1959, he married Elizabeth Johnson in Plymouth, Iowa. They had two children, Tracy and Todd. Betty passed away in 1968. In 1970, he married Nancy Reigel in Marshfield, WI. Together they had two daughters, Sara and Katie. Duaine and Nancy moved to Cannon Falls in 1972. Duaine loved the great outdoors; camping, fishing, hunting, horseback riding, and good old fashioned yard/farm work were his passions. He also loved to travel. The last nine years he and Nancy spent their winters in Arizona getting away from the cold. Some of their other travels included Hawaii, Boundary Waters, Crosslake, Mexico and an Alaskan cruise with longtime friends. Animals were always dear to his heart, raising beef cattle, horses, and loving on his Irish Setter dogs. He was a master at the art of conversation, a connoisseur of board and card games, and an avid Minnesota sports fan. He had a deep love for his kids and grandkids, supporting them by being a Cubmaster, an outspoken number one fan, a track timer, and an epic teaser. DJ was one of a kind! Duaine is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Nancy; four children, Tracy (David) Maddy of Gilbert, AZ, Todd (Darlene) Berhow of LaGrange, KY, Sara (Michael) Broze of Shakopee, and Katie (Steve) Holman of Northfield; and grandchildren, Kelsey (Jake) Brown, Seth Maddy, Jordan, Elizabeth and Renée Berhow, Carter, Paige, and Grant Broze, and Jack, Sam, Ruby and Lily Holman. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Elizabeth; parents, Harley and Ruth; brother, Wesley; and sister, Meridith Quitney. Visitation will be on Monday, January 16 from 4-8 p.m. at Lundberg Funeral Home in Cannon Falls. A memorial service will be on Tuesday, January 17 at 11 a.m., with visitation from 10-11 a.m., at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Cannon Falls.
