Dorothy Viola Steenblock, age 93 of Red Wing and formerly of Cannon Falls, died on Monday morning, July 30, 2007 at St. Brigid's at Hi-Park in Red Wing.
Dorothy was born on July 1, 1914 in Stanton, the daughter of Ray and Edna (Platt) Daniels. She grew up in the rural area of Goodhue County, attended grade school, high school and teacher training in the Cannon Falls Public School. She received her Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Education from the Winona State University in Winona, MN.
Dorothy taught in the rural schools of Goodhue County for many years. She then taught in Randolph, Farmington, and retired from District #197 in the West St. Paul school system in 1974, after 41 years of teaching.
She spent summer vacations working locally, mostly at the Home Cafe, Bus Depot, Windy Acres, Mineral Springs Sanitorium, and Grand Silver Stores in St. Paul.
Dorothy served with the U.S. Marine Corps for two years during World War II. She was stationed at Camp LeJeune, North Carolina, Omaha and Philadelphia.
Dorothy married Loren E. Steenblock on June 24, 1967 at the First English Lutheran Church in Cannon Falls.
Dorothy worked as a volunteer in the Cannon Falls Nursing Home for a number of years. She was a longtime member of the First English Lutheran Church, where she served on the church council and taught summer Bible school. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Zion Chapter #6. She was a life member of the American Legion Post #142, the American Legion Post #142 Auxiliary, and the VFW Post #4452 Auxiliary. She was also a member of the Cannon Falls Hospital Auxiliary.
She is survived by her husband of 40 years, Loren; sister, Irene (Harvey) Sumner of Cannon Falls; sister-in-law, Jane Daniels of Rochester; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, an infant and Owen Daniels; and sister, Norma Folkert.
Funeral service will be held on Friday, August 3 at 11:00 a.m. at the First English Lutheran Church in Cannon Falls, with Pastor Phillip Ruud officiating. Interment will follow at the Cannon Falls Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday at church from 10-11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the First English Lutheran Church, American Heart Association, and American Cancer Society.
