Doris Sauter

Doris A. Sauter, age 89, a life-long resident of Cannon Falls, died on Thursday afternoon, December 14, 2006 at the Angels Care Center in Cannon Falls. Doris was born at home on the Safe family farm in Cannon Falls Township on December 9, 1917, the daughter of Charles L. and Alice E. (Bergstad) Safe. She grew up in the Spring Garden area and attended country school. Following the death of her sister-in-law, Harriet Safe, she helped raise her nephews, Dennis and Darold Safe. Doris met her future husband at the Safe farm, where he was a hired hand after his honorable discharge from the US Army. Doris married Dean G. Sauter the next year on April 12, 1947 at Spring Garden Lutheran Church. They lived in an apartment in Cannon Falls until they had an opportunity to buy a farm on County #8, east of Cannon Falls. As well as raising her children, she started working at the Gambles Store (later Hjermstad Hardware). She had worked there for 40 years. In 1966, they moved off the farm and bought their house at 425 N. York St. in Cannon Falls, where she continued living until her stroke on December 16, 2002. She has been a resident of the Angels Care Center since that time. Doris lived her life to the fullest, and her passions included her family, fishing, and arts and crafts. She also loved to cook and travel with family. In her youth, she also enjoyed playing the piano. She was a member of St. Ansgar's Lutheran Church, where she had been active in the ladies aid. For many years, she had also been very active in the county homemaker's group. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dean on July 16, 1980; and brothers, Virgil and Raymond Safe. She is survived by her children, Ron (fianc??, Ann Newhouse) of Lakeville, Bev (Terry) Ahlstrom of Burnsville and Brenda (Merlyn) Lindell of Cannon Falls; three grandchildren, Lisa Lindell, Jamie (Michele) Lindell and Kristin Ahlstrom; three great-grandchildren, Devlin and Ava Ahlstrom, and Jada Lindell; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Joyce Sauter, John and Ruby Sauter, Donna Redshaw and Ruth Sauter; and nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral service will be held on Monday, December 18 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Ansgar's Lutheran Church in Cannon Falls, with Pastor Arthur Sharot and Pastor Gary Schulz officiating. Interment will follow at the Cannon Falls Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 5-7 p.m. at Lundberg Funeral Home in Cannon Falls. There will also be visitation at the church on Monday from 10-11 a.m. Memorials are preferred to the Angels Care Center Chapel Fund.
