Donald Schmitt

Donald LeRoy Schmitt, age 87 of Cannon Falls, died Friday, May 3, 2013 at the Angels Care Center in Cannon Falls. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 am Monday, May 6, 2013 at St. Pius V Catholic Church. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service at church. Interment will be in the St. Pius Catholic Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the St. Croix Hospice, Angels Care Center in Cannon Falls or the Alzheimer's Research Foundation. Donald was born May 30, 1925 in Kimball, South Dakota to Nicolas and Agnes (Westendorf) Schmitt. Immediately after graduating from high school, he entered active duty in the US Army on June 22, 1943. He was stationed in the Pacific Theatre during WWII. Upon his honorable discharge in 1946, Don was selected and attended the officer development program at the University of Montana in Missoula. He went on to attend the University of South Dakota where he met the love of his life, Audrey Iverson. They were married on November 6, 1947 in Vermillion, South Dakota. They moved to Minneapolis where he was an employee with the Milwaukee Road. The railroad job brought him and his family to Cannon Falls where they enjoyed many years and raised their two children, Suzanne and Rob. Don later worked as an accountant for Minnesota Malting Company for 25 years. Don enjoyed biking, going on walks and gardening. He was handy around the house where he built a garage and sunroom. He and Audrey enjoyed traveling together to Europe, Alaska, and also California and Virginia to see their children and grandchildren. They also volunteered their time together with Meals On Wheels and serving at St. Pius V. Don was also a member of the VFW. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Audrey of Cannon Falls; daughter, Suzanne Schmitt of Delray Beach, FL; grandchildren, Chelsea and Colin; daughter-in-law, Christine of Palo Alto, CA. He is preceded in death by his son Rob in 2000; parents; brothers Delbert and Bernard and sister Bernice Falor.
