Dean Babcock Poe, age 88, a lifelong resident of Cannon Falls, died on Thursday afternoon, January 17, 2008 at the Angels Care Center in Cannon Falls.
Dean was born on June 25, 1919 in Cannon Falls, the son of Richard M. and Myra M. (Scofield) Poe. He graduated from the Cannon Falls High School in 1939.
He married Edna Hellerud in June, 1945. Dean built the Windy Acres building, and he and Edna ran the restaurant for a couple of years, until selling it to Maurice and Evalyn Penfield. Edna died in June, 1963.
Dean married Luella Jane (Carpenter) Nelson in August, 1963.
Dean was an active member of the First Congregational Church U.C.C. in Cannon Falls, where he was a bell ringer for many years, sang solos, and delivered the church bulletin to members residing at the nursing home.
Dean loved the woods! He was employed as a logger and lumberman most all of his life. He owned and operated the Poe Tree Farm, south of Cannon Falls, until retiring in 1985. He sold his business to Conrad Johnson. After retiring, Dean built their log house behind the mill, where he enjoyed woodturning.
He is survived by his wife of over 44 years, Luella Jane; children, Lester Poe, Maurice (Carla) Nelson, Laura Luke, and Rolla Jane (John) Boersma; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Edna; daughters, Leatrice Poe and Gwen Poe; brother, Morris Poe; and sister, Marjorie Mattix.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, January 22 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Congregational Church U.C.C. in Cannon Falls, with Pastor JoBeth Marshall officiating. Following a luncheon at church, interment will be held at the Valley Grove Cemetery in Nerstrand.
Visitation will be held on Monday from 4-7 p.m. at Lundberg Funeral Home in Cannon Falls. There will also be visitation at the church on Tuesday from 10-11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the First Congregational Church.
Active pallbearers will be his grandchildren, Greg and Nicole Poe, Bobby Nelson, Jayne Boersma, Craig and Michael Nelson. Honorary pallbearers will be Conrad Johnson, Earl Johnson and Robert Boser.
