David William Lewis, age 48 of Cannon Falls, died unexpectedly on Wednesday afternoon, October 7, 2009 at the Cannon Falls Medical Center.
Dave was born on July 4, 1961 in Evanston, Illinois, the son of Paul and Norma (Fahlberg) Lewis. He graduated in 1979 from the Cannon Falls High School, and directly enlisted with the U.S. Army. Dave served from July 18, 1979 in California and later Germany as a helicopter mechanic, until his honorable discharge on February 24, 1984. He lived in California, where he married Mary Barboa and they had two sons. They later divorced. While living in Hawaii, he met his future wife. Dave and Shonna Varize were married in Hawaii on January 17, 1997, and they had their daughter, Harley.
Dave loved the outdoors, hunting and fishing. He also had a passion for music, and will be remembered most for his love of family.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Norma Rae Lewis; paternal grandparents, Paul and Jennie Lewis, and maternal grandfather, Lou “Pops” Fahlberg.
He is survived by his wife, Shonna of Cannon Falls; daughter, Harley, at home; two sons currently serving with U.S. Army, Chase Lewis of Colorado, and Noah (Caitlin) Lewis in Iraq; father, Paul (fiancé, Judy Barling) of Cannon Falls; grandmother, Berniece Fahlberg of Charlotte, North Carolina; brothers and sister, Mark (Megan) of Cannon Falls, Polly (Steve) Valade of Cannon Falls, and Tom (Greta) of Welch; nieces and nephews, Scott, Dillon and Damian Lewis, Tristan Olson, Cheryl (Tony) Dunaskie, Caroline and Amanda Valade; great nieces and nephews; and his in-law’s from Hawaii: parents-in-law, Jerome and Darleen Varize, sister-in-law, Sheila Varize; brother-in-law, Ivan Varize; nieces, Tori, Navi, Sera, and Jada; and nephew, Ikaika.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 17 at 5:00 p.m. at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Cannon Falls, with Rev. Barbara Martin and Rev. Dr. Gary Titusdahl officiating. Military honors will be presented by the VFW Nelson Scofield Post #4452.
Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers.
Honorary pallbearers will be Matt Kucera, Blake Butler, Aron Hayes and Gregg Morrill.
