Darrell Gordon Ista, age 86 of Hampton, died peacefully at the Northfield Hospital Long Term Care Center the morning of Saturday July 12, 2014. Darrell was born on January 12, 1928, in Randolph, the son of H.E. "Donny" and Isabelle (Vaughn) Ista. He was a paratrooper in the 11th Airborne Division and served in occupation forces in Japan. He married June Duncan on December 29, 1948 at the First English Lutheran Church in Cannon Falls. Soon thereafter the purchased a family farm in Hampton Township where they lived for over 60 years and raised their four children. Darrell was a lifelong farmer and had a dairy cattle operation for many years as well. He also worked for Continental Nitrogen Resources in Inver Grove Heights. He and June were active members of First English Lutheran Church and also spent a significant amount of time volunteering with the food shelf. They were dedicated supporters of Randolph Schools and other community organizations. Darrell was also actively involved with the Izaak Walton League and various veteran associations. Darrell will be remembered for the love he had for his family, his strong work ethic and his integrity. In addition to farming, he enjoyed fishing and woodworking. He and June also enjoyed traveling across Minnesota and the rest of the United States attending family events and visiting historic Civil War sites. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife June;, his parents, brother Norman Ista, and brother-in-law James Gergen. He is survived by daughter, Margaret "Peg" (Jerry) Swanson of St. Paul, son, Steve (Jane) Ista of Houston, TX, John (LuAnn) Ista of Northfield, and William "Bill" (Cindy) Ista of Minnesott Beach, North Carolina; seven grandchildren, Gretchen (Gary) Johnson, Michelle Swanson, Christi (Travis) Nonn, Amanda Ista, Andy Ista, Thomas Ista, and Rachel (Peter) Bolle; seven great-grandchildren, Kenny, Michael, Riley, Madeline, Samara, Lydia, Nalani; brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Rodney & Verlaine Duncan , Betty Gergen, Mary Lou Ista and many nieces, nephews. Visitation will take place 4-8 PM Thursday at Lundberg Funeral Home, 5839 Hwy 19 Blvd, Cannon Falls and 10-11 AM Friday at church. Funeral Service 11 AM Friday at First English Lutheran Church, 511 W. Belle St, Cannon Falls. Burial Cannon Falls Cemetery. Memorials are preferred to First English Church Foundation, Randolph Dollars for Scholars or Pet Adoption of Cannon Valley.
