Darold L. Safe

Darold Safe, age 87, of Cannon Falls, died Tuesday, December 5^th, 2023 at Cannon Country Senior Living.

Darold Laverne Safe was born on June 13, 1936, in Red Wing, Minnesota, the son of Raymond and Harriet (Brekke) Safe. He grew up in the Spring Garden area on his family’s farm and went to District 46 Country School. After completing the eighth grade, Darold began farming with his father. Later, he went to work as a plumber, working for Goyer Plumbing in Red Wing for 40 years. He was a faithful member of the Local 34, the Plumbing Union. Darold also did road construction work occasionally, which brought him to the Marcell area in northern Minnesota. In Marcell, he enjoyed many years in the northwoods at his cabin, where the best times were spent hunting, splitting wood, and having coffee with his good friend, Gary Lemke.

Throughout his life, Darold was a faithful member of Spring Garden Lutheran Church, where he served on the Lutheran Men in Mission Group. On June 16, 1956, Darold married Charlotte Myran, even after her parents gave him a note with five dollars, telling him to stay away from their daughter. Darold and Charlotte were married at Trinity Lutheran Church in Wanamingo. Together they raised three boys on the farm and were married for sixty-seven years. Their marriage taught us what it means to love, to persist, and to care deeply for one another. Darold loved the time he spent with his family most of all – whether going to his grandchildren’s sporting events, having coffee on the porch after church, or going to NASCAR races with his sons. His retirement years brought him great joy, as he rode his Harley Davidson motorcycle all around southeastern Minnesota and worked on antique tractors. Darold loved a good challenge, and he loved taking (probably way too many) risks.

His surviving loved ones include his wife Charlotte, his children Cary (Kathy) Safe, Scott (Brenda) Safe, and Rahn (Susan) Safe; grandchildren Nathan (Alice) Safe, Corin (Damon) McDougald. Dean (Gerardo) Aponte-Safe, Dustin (Trisha Metty) Safe, Dylan (Kelli Ringeisen) Safe, Danny (Ali Buck), Alex (Kristin) Safe, and Emma (Brad) Hess; 10 great-grandchildren; Kaden, Charles and Spencer Safe, Thorson and Magnus McDougald, Landon and Decker Hess, Harrison and AnnaBelle Safe, June Safe. Godchildren: Jay Lemke, Brad Lemke, Danielle Malecha, Steven Myran, Steven Miller, Kris Palma, Dale Quam, Sherri Safe, and Joey Lundell.

Darold was preceded in death by his parents Raymond and Harriet, his step-mother Pearl Safe, brother Dennis Safe, and nephew Brad Lemke.

Memorial services will be on Saturday, December 9, 2023 at 11:00 am at Spring Garden Lutheran Church, 10239 County Rd 1, Cannon Falls, MN 55009. There will be a visitation at the church, where friends may call one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Rev. Tim Maybee and Rev. Dean Aponte-Safe will be officiating Darold’s service. Darold’s funeral will be livestreamed and may be viewedby clicking the link below.
