Darlene was born on January 15, 1930 in Mt. Vernon, South Dakota, the daughter of John E. and Leonne F. (Johnson) Hoisington. She grew up in Flandreau, South Dakota and graduated from Flandreau High School in 1947. Following graduation, she attended the General Beadle Teacher's College in Madison, SD for teacher's training. At the age of 17, she taught in rural country school for one year.
She married Lawrence A. "Larry" Podritz on September 4, 1948 in Lemmon, SD.
Because of her husband's work, they had moved to different communities in South Dakota, North Dakota and western Minnesota, before moving to the Randolph area in 1967. They moved in to Randolph in 1974.
Darlene was a homemaker, as well as working at Sheldahl in Northfield. For over 20 years, she and her husband owned and operated the Village Mini Market in Randolph from 1978 until 2001.
Darlene was an active member of the Christ United Methodist Church in Randolph, where she was also involved with the UMW (United Methodist Women.) She loved to garden, which included her flower and vegetable gardens. She also enjoyed bowling. Darlene was very proud of her family, and especially loved spending time with her grandchildren.
Her husband, Larry died on May 22, 2002. She was also preceded in death by her parents; her son, Dennis in 1968; sister, Joyce Davis; and step-sister, Janice Miles.
She is survived by her children, Lawrence Jr. "Larry" (Lynette) of St. Croix Falls, WI, Dick (Denise), Kim (Linda) and Quin (Lisa), all of Randolph; 8 grandchildren, Jason (Hillary), Trent, Ryan, Courtney, Ethan, Brandon, Chelsea and Collin; two step-sisters, Anita (Larry) Mitzel of Sioux Falls, SD and Sharon (Jerry) Neil of Star Prairie, WI; half sister, Jackie (Glen) Burgraff of Egan, SD; and nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December. 28 at 10:30 a.m. at the Christ United Methodist Church near Randolph (29470 Gaylord Ave.), with Pastor Daniel Horn officiating. Interment will follow at the Lakeside Cemetery near Randolph.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 5-8 pm at Lundberg Funeral Home in Cannon Falls (5839 Hwy 19 Blvd). There will also be visitation at the church on Thursday from 9:30-10:30 am.
Memorials are preferred to Christ United Methodist Church and the UMW.
Active pallbearers will be nephews, Jerry and Jack Davis, Gaylord and Scott Anderson, Roy and Mike Smith. Honorary pallbearers will be friends Ron Pommerening, John Day, Art Gangloff and Dave Blank.
