Christine E. Sholing

June 4, 1943 — May 10, 2023

Formerly of Cannon Falls

Christine Ellen (Vold) Sholing, age 79, a longtime resident of Cannon Falls, died on Wednesday evening, May 10, 2023 at Benedictine Living Community in Red Wing.

Christine was born at home on June 4, 1943 in Wanamingo Township, MN, the daughter of Ole and Marian (Gunderson) Vold. She married Donald Sholing on October 10, 1959 at Aspelund Emmanuel Lutheran Church, and together they raised six children.

She treasured her family and friends. Don and Christine’s home was a loving, welcoming place for all. Over the years they selflessly supported many others regardless of their own circumstances.  Christine was often quiet and reserved, but her sense of humor and sharp wit made even the most ordinary times feel fun and memorable.

Christine spent many busy years as a homemaker and caregiver for her own children and many others as well.  She also worked at Kid Duds, then later at the Caravan Motel, all while she and Don managed and worked the family businesses.

Her life changed dramatically in 2006 when she suffered a debilitating stroke. With assistance from family, she continued living at home until she and Don moved to a care facility shortly before Don’s passing in 2015.

Christine touched many lives with her caring and compassionate demeanor and will be remembered for the love she shared with all.

She is survived by her children, Deb (Steve) Gesme of Cannon Falls, Tammy (John) Jendrysik of Saint Charles, IL, David Sholing of Cannon Falls, Vicki Sholing of Cannon Falls, and Julie (Corey) Staples of Maple Grove; 6 grandchildren, Michael (Laura) Gesme, Rebecca Gesme, Vivienne Jendrysik, Erica (Jared) Castrellon, Daniel Sholing, and Lindy Staples; 4 great-grandchildren, Isla and Benjamin Gesme, Morgan and Nico Castrellon; sisters, Joann Salefske of Ohio, Karen Johnson of Red Wing, and Sonja (Mike) Landon of Cannon Falls; in-laws, Janet Vold of Cannon Falls, Donna Vold of Milwaukee, WI, Terri Vold of Red Wing, Bonnie (Ken) Jenson of Pine Island, Mary Jo (Scott) Weyand of Siren, WI, and Bernie (Laurel) Sholing of Las Vegas, NV; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Don; daughter, Kelly in 1991; brothers, Joel, Charles and Melvin Vold; sisters, Katherine Roth and Diane Murphy; and in-laws, Leonard Sholing and Doris Froyum.
