Christine Gjemse

Christine Gjemse, age 91 of Cannon Falls, died on Saturday morning, September 18, 2010 at the Angels Care Center in Cannon Falls, where she has been a resident for the past year-and-a-half. Christine Njos was born in Hader on April 26, 1919, the daughter of Andrew and Martha (Liedahl) Njos. She attended country school through the 8th grade. Christine married Lewis Gjemse on June 20, 1936 and the couple made their home in Hader. She loved crocheting, quilting, flowers, old-time music, basketball (especially the Timberwolves) and her Norwegian heritage cooking. She was a lifelong active member of Urland Lutheran Church. Christine is survived by her daughter, Carol (Conrad) Johnson of Cannon Falls; son, LeRoy (Carol) Gjemse of Hader, and Oscar Laverne Berg who came to live with the family when he was seven years old. She is also survived by 8 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and 9 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis on October 26, 1987; son, Robert Gjemse in 1968; grandson, Jody Gjemse in 1994; granddaughter, Becky Gjemse in 1995; five sisters, Marie Berg, Anna Lindahl, Johana Osen and Margaret Swanson; and five brothers, Pete Njos, Harold Njos, Alvin Ness, Carl Njos and Knute Njos. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 22 at 11:00 a.m., with visitation from 10-11 a.m., at Urland Lutheran Church in rural Cannon Falls, with Pastor Arthur Sharot and Pastor Dan Clites officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Rodney Johnson, Danny Johnson, Jamie Gjemse, Peter Gjemse, Brett Gjemse and Tom Gjemse. Honorary pallbearers will be all of her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the American Diabetes Association-Minnesota and the chapel fund at Angels Care Center.
