Carol Gilbertson

Carol A. Gilbertson, age 82, of Cannon Falls, died March 11, 2017 at Three Links Care Center in Northfield following a brief illness. Carol was born on November 24, 1934, in Minneapolis, the daughter of Lawrence and Aleda Henninger. After graduating from Washburn High School, Carol attended St. Olaf College in Northfield. She began first in the nursing program and then changed her major to English. She liked to joke that she was the first drop-out of the school's nursing program. After graduation she decided to make Northfield her home and married Grant Gilbertson on September 7, 1956. In 1966, at age 32, she suffered a stroke that left her left side paralyzed. Through intense therapy she was able to regain some use of her leg and arm, and raised three children living in rural Northfield for almost thirty years. She volunteered as a transportation coordinator for many years, along with being a telecare caller. She and Grant moved to Cannon Falls where she joined the Rachel Circle at First English Lutheran Church and was able to enjoy her time reading and getting to know Cannon Falls. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Grant, sons Michael (Marilyn) Gilbertson of Northfield, Jon (Evie) Gilbertson of Minneapolis, and Daughter Melissa Gilbertson of Cannon Falls. She is also survived by her brother James Henninger of Naples, FL, grandson Matthew Gilbertson of Minneapolis, granddaughters Rachel Gilbertson and Haley Gilbertson of Minneapolis, and Melissa (Kris) Thorsheim of Northfield, and great-grandson Luke Thorsheim. A memorial service will be held at First English Lutheran Church in Cannon Falls on Saturday, April 22, 2017, at 11:00 am. There will be a visitation one hour prior to the service.
