Carl Lloyd Robeson, age 82 of Hastings and formerly of Hampton, died on Wednesday afternoon, September 2, 2009 at the Regina Nursing Home in Hastings.
Carl was born the second oldest of eight children on May 12, 1927 near Knox City, Missouri, the son of Harold and Mabel (Primm) Robeson. After graduating from Memphis (Missouri) High School, Carl enlisted with the United States Navy in 1945 and served his country during World War II. He was honorably discharged in August, 1946. He attended Gem City Business College in Quincy, Illinois, and in 1947, went to work with Western Merchantile Company in their sales department.
Carl was united in marriage to Frances I. Summers on November 14, 1948 in Ft. Madison, Iowa. In January, 1954, Carl started employment with The Hartford Insurance Company in Kansas City, MO. In 1963, he became the local manager in South St. Paul and Milwaukee, and the Mortality Sales Director for the U.S. and Canada. He retired in May, 1989 after 36 years.
Carl spent many happy hours hunting with his bird dogs, and enjoyed participating and judging dog trials throughout the midwest.
As a gifted horseman, Carl owned Quarter horses, Tennessee Walkers, Thoroughbreds, and Standardbred horses. He trained and raced in harness races, and spent a lot of time training at the race track at the Cannon Valley Fairgrounds in Cannon Falls. “Carl’s Big Mack,” whom he raised, trained and drove, was his favorite Standardbred.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Virginia Cary; and brother, Harry Robeson.
He is survived by his wife of over 60 years, Frances; daughters and sons-in-law, Anita Robeson and Jerry Johnson of Southlake, Texas, and Michele and Dan Stoffel of Turtle Lake, WI; grandchildren, David Stoffel and Missy Whirry, Nicole (Stoffel) and Dustin Filler, Alex Johnson, and Drew Johnson; five great-grandchildren; sisters and brothers, Louise (Richard) Wells of Quincy, IL, Elsie Wybrant of Kirksville, MO, Georgia (Bill) Shields of Bloomington, IN, Edward (Ellen) Robeson of Queen City, MO, and Don (Mary) Robeson of Quincy, IL; sister-in-law, Margaret Robeson of Memphis, MO; and nieces, nephews, friends and associates.
Funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 5 at 11:00 a.m. at the Christ United Methodist Church, 29470 Gaylord Ave, Cannon Falls, with Pastor Dan Horn officiating. Interment with military honors will follow a luncheon at church at St. Patrick's Cemetery in Inver Grove Heights. Visitation will be held on Friday from 4-8 p.m. at Lundberg Funeral Home. There will also be visitation at the church from 10-11 a.m. on Saturday.
Memorials are preferred to the Prayer Garden at Christ United Methodist Church, or donor's choice.
Active pallbearers will be David Stoffel, Alex Johnson, Drew Johnson, Dustin Filler, C.J. Aune and Jack LeClair.
