Betty VanGuilder

Betty B. VanGuilder, age 85, of Cannon Falls, died on Monday evening, May 10, 2010 after a brief stay at Angels Care Center in Cannon Falls.

Betty was born on October 5, 1924 in Sciota Township, the youngest of eight children to John and Blanche (Rarick) Fleming. She grew up in Randolph and attended school there.

She married Gene E. VanGuilder on November 23, 1946 at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Cannon Falls. She was a lifelong member there and had been involved in the Mother’s Club, Women’s Circle and the church choir.

She raised their six children and also worked in different businesses in Cannon Falls, including the Hi-Quality Bakery and The Pirate. She also enjoyed being a foster grandparent at the elementary school, where she was known as “Grandma Betty.” She loved to travel, do crafts, and play cards!

Betty will be remembered most for her sense of humor, her kind and caring disposition, and her love of family.

She is survived by her six children, Connie (Ken) Weaver and Bette (Bill) Albert, all of Peoria, AZ, Cheri VanGuilder, Sue (Henry) Swanson, and Tammy (Dan) Smith, all of Cannon Falls, and Kerry (Jennifer) VanGuilder of Nerstrand; son-in-law, Roger Smith of Excelsior; 18 grandchildren, Randy and J.R. Roehrick, Brock and Ryan Rechtzigel, Bree Smude, Brandon Mattson, Brady Smith, Tammy Anderson Mandi Hofstedt, Luke Swanson, Kerrien Smith, Johnna, Erin and Dakota VanGuilder, Chas and Mike Grams, Hannah and Lacey Moeller; 20 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gene on October 30, 1989; granddaughter, Jessica Rechtzigel-Fritz; daughter-in-law, Caroline VanGuilder; five brothers, Jack, Bill, Bob, Stan and Harry Fleming; and two sisters, Ann Banks and Blanche Miller.

Funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 15 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, with Pastor Barbara Martin officiating. Interment will follow at the Stanton Cemetery.

Visitation will be held on Friday, May 14 from 5-8 pm, with a prayer service at 7 pm, at Lundberg Funeral Home in Cannon Falls. There will also be visitation at the church on Saturday from 10-11 a.m.

Active pallbearers will be her grandsons, Randy and J.R. Roehrick, Brock and Ryan Rechtzigel, Brandon Mattson, Luke Swanson, Dakota VanGuilder and Mike Grams. Honorary pallbearers will be her granddaughters, Bree Smude, Brady Smith, Tammy Anderson, Mandi Hofstedt, Kerrien Smith, Johnna and Erin VanGuilder, Chas Grams, Hannah and Lacey Moeller.
