Betty Sjoquist

age 90, of Cannon Falls died Sunday evening May 9, 2010 at Cannon Falls Medical Center in Cannon Falls.

Betty Caroline was born November 23, 1919 in Red Wing, Minnesota the daughter of Albert & Ellen (Gustafson) Nelson. She was raised in Red Wing and graduated from Red Wing High School in 1937. She was united in marriage with Harold A. Sjoquist on November 29, 1947 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Red Wing. Together they farmed until 1975, were active in the Leon Farm Bureau and the Izaak Walton League. Betty was a pie baker at the Cannon Falls Bakery, Little Oscar’s and the Cannonball Restaurant. She was known as Grandma Betty to more than her grandchildren. Betty enjoyed sharing her life experiences with others through the Historical Society and local schools. She will be remembered for her deep devotion to her family and was involved in her children and grandchildren’s sports and activities. She volunteered over 25 years with the bloodmobile and over 27 years with Meals on Wheels. Betty was also active in Spring Garden Lutheran Church where she was one of the first women on the church council. She was a member of Spring Garden Church sewing circle, served as a Sunday School teacher, a 4H leader, an election judge for Leon Township and the city of Cannon Falls, and was a member of the Swedish Singers. Betty was also talented at water witching and found over 25 wells in the community.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband Harold, son Alan, sister Ethel Suchy. She is survived by children Dennis ( Joyce) of Cannon Falls, Neal (Christine) of Cannon Falls, Lynnea of Cannon Falls, Lynnette of Eagan, Mark (Cynthia) of Cannon Falls; Grandchildren Jennifer (Scott) Quade, Christine (Anthony) Andler, Corey (Stacey) Sjoquist, Monica (Jacob) Dinauer, Molly & Maggie Sjoquist, Lincoln (Kim) Sjoquist, Serene (Daryn) Smith, Grant (Tiffany) Sjoquist, Clinton (Bonnie) Sjoquist; great-grandchildren Cameron & Cannon Quade, Liam, Elliott & Graham Sjoquist, Estella & Drew Dinauer, Luke, Ashlyn & Chloe Sjoquist, Colten Smith, Josie Sjoquist & Sophie Sjoquist, brother Oliver (Ann) Nelson of Yakima, Washington.

Funeral Service 11 AM Friday May 14 at Spring Garden Lutheran Church in Cannon Falls. Burial church cemetery. Visitation 4-8 PM Thursday AT SPRING GARDEN CHURCH with a prayer service at 7:30 PM. Visitation also 10-11 AM Friday. Memorials preferred to Spring Garden Lutheran Church.
