Barbara Smith

June 30, 1935 — January 22, 2007

Barbara Jean Smith, age 71, a lifelong resident of Cannon Falls, died unexpectedly on Monday morning, January 22, 2007 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester.

Barb was born at home on June 30, 1935 in White Rock, the daughter of James F. and Ruth E. (Hagman) Henderson. She graduated from the Cannon Falls High School in 1953, and for a brief time she worked at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester.

She married DuWayne C. Smith, also known as "Dewey" or "DuBar",on December 19, 1953 at the Spring Garden Lutheran Church. They farmed in Cannon Falls Township for many years, where Barb was not only a homemaker raising their four children, but was also working with her husband on the farm. When all of the children were in school, she went to work as a waitress at the Windy Acres, and later as a cook for many years at the Cannonball Restaurant. She and her sister, Donna Freeberg operated the Trash and Treasures Store for about a year. Then Barb and Dewey owned and operated Barb's Corner Caf?? in downtown Cannon Falls for years. Following the sale of the caf??, she went on to work at the Cannon Falls Police Department as a dispatcher. Following the death of their son, Danny she took training for hospice care, and worked with the Zumbrota Area Hospice for many years. Since 2003, Barb has worked at the Hi-Quality Bakery.

Barb had a passion for life! She enjoyed dancing, especially waltzes, collecting antiques and cooking. Cooking was a large part of her life, and she was a great cook! She was a writer, and loved to pen her thoughts. She will be remembered by her family and friends for the beautiful poetry she has written! She volunteered with the CCIC, preparing monthly meals. She was a member of First English Lutheran Church in Cannon Falls, where she had been a choir member, circle leader, and teacher for Sunday school and Bible school. She and her husband also served as ushers for many years.

Her greatest joy in life was her family! She loved spending time with her husband in all that they did together; from dancing, to camping at the Cannon Falls Campground for over 30 years, to spending time up north in Nevis and Nisswa, to volunteering for Meals on Wheels, to their little trips to Treasure Island and other casinos, to Friday night fish fries at Trophy House, to being together with their family. Her love, Dewey died on October 17, 2006.

She was so proud of her children and grandchildren, and was always there for them. She was supportive, and always encouraged them to work hard because good things would come to them if they did. She has left quite a loving legacy for her family and friends!

She is survived by her three daughters, Kristi (Steve) Bodette, Tammy Card and Michelle (Robby) Lindell, all of Cannon Falls; daughter-in-law, Barb (Cory) Franklin of Cannon Falls; son-in-law, Rob Card of Cannon Falls; twelve grandchildren, Angie Lindell (Kyle Eggum), Heidi Sue Lindell (Corey Bracken), Scott Lindell, Mike (Trista) Bodette, Mindi (Taylor) Pagel, Erin, Rose and Eric Card, Ryan and Bradi Smith and MaKenzie Franklin; four great-grandchildren, Dylan and Danielle Bodette, Rowan Eggum and Maddox Lindell; sister, Donna Freeberg of Cannon Falls; sister-in-law, Dawn (Jerry) Beedle of St. Croix Beach, MN; and many nieces and nephews.
