Allen LaVerne Hjermstad, age 72 of Wanamingo Township, died unexpectedly at his home on Thursday, December 10, 2009.
Allen was born on June 13, 1937 in Faribault, the son of Alf and Vera (Nesseth) Hjermstad. He graduated from Wanamingo High School in 1955, and in 1959, he went on to serve with the National Guard for six years.
He married Audrey E. Fullerton on September 11, 1965 at St. Lukes United Church of Christ in Faribault. They made their home in Wanamingo Township, where Allen had farmed and operated Hjermstad’s Tire and Oil, until his retirement in 1997.
Allen was an active member of the Cannon City Community Church. Because of his ultimate love of the Lord, Allen’s mission in life was to reach out to as many people as he could by distributing Christian literature.
Allen had a passion for motors of all kinds, and had an avid interest in automotive and aviation history.
He will be remembered most for his strong faith and his love for his family. He was a wonderful grandfather and will be missed by “the apples of his eyes,” his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Audrey; two daughters, Natalie Lueck of Valencia, CA and Nancy (Dale) Johnson of Cannon Falls; five grandchildren, Elise and Grace Lueck, Ashley, Kallie and Ryan Johnson; his brother, Wayne (Solveig) Hjermstad of Bruce, SD; nephews and nieces, Micah Hjermstad of Pittsburg, PA, Gracia Hjermstad of Williston, ND, Becca Hjermstad of New Hope, Kevin (Joyce) Jacobson and Craig (Theresa) Jacobson, all of Wanamingo; and other great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alf and Vera Hjermstad; and his sister and her husband, Virginia and Allan Jacobson.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 15 at 1:00 p.m. at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church at Aspelund in rural Kenyon, with Pastor Gary Wunderlich officiating.
Interment will follow at the church cemetery.
